William Sherrin found guilty of rape.

July 4, 2009

For Immediate Release

Newport News, Virginia

On July 8th, 2009 William Sherrin was sentenced to 100 years with 60 years suspended for 2 counts of rape.

The victim in this case was 7 years old when her mother’s boyfriend, William Sherrin, came into her bedroom and raped her. He did this on at least two occasions.  When the victim went to a relatives house that weekend she disclosed to her cousin what happened, and two counts of rape were brought forward.
After almost 2 years of the defendant’s continuances the case was finally brought forward.  The Judge found the defendant guilty and justice was served.

At the sentencing hearing, evidence was brought forward that showed Sherrin was on probation for a breaking and entering.  One of the many conditions of his probation was that he was not permitted to have contact with children.  Therefore, Sherrin living with the victim in this case was a violation of his probation.  At the sentencing there was also evidence put on that Sherrin had already been ordered to complete sex offender treatment and he was unsuccessful.

After the Judge heard all of the evidence she sentenced Sherrin to 100 years in the penitentiary with 60 years suspended, which gives him 40 years to serve.  He has been placed on supervised probation indefinitely upon his release, he is ordered to have no contact with any children, and he is ordered to register as a sex offender upon his release.

Sherrin will be in his 70’s when he is released.  The best part about this outcome is that the victim received justice and she can finally put this horrible experience behind her.  This case was prosecuted by Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, Artisha Todd.
